This is a very stylish, high quality Art Deco Silver Plate Three Piece Tea Set. The set comprises a family size teapot, a milk jug and a sugar bowl. The pieces are octagonal with each piece standing on a stepped pedestal foot. The teapot has a brown bakelite handle and finial.
The tea set was made in Birmingham by George Bowen & Sons and dates to around the 1920s/30s. The firm was established in Birmingham by Jonas Bowen in around 1840. After his retirement his sons Jonas & George took over but after a short period they split and the two separate companies of George Bowen & Sons and Jonas Bowen & Sons were formed around about 1870. They were both specialist electroplaters and the two companies continued into the early years of the 20th century.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents, just a very small amount of plate loss on some of the high ribs and the superficial surface wear that has to be expected with use and the passage of time. The hinge on the teapot is in good working order and the lid sits flush with the body. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The teapot is 30cm / 11.8ins from spout to handle, 12.3cm / 4.8ins across the body and stands 15.5cm / 6.1ins high. The milk jug is 16.2cm / 6.4ins from lip to handle, 8.3cm / 3.3ins across the body and stands 8.7cm / 3.4ins high. The sugar bowl is 17.7cm / 7ins from handle to handle, 9cm / 3.5ins across the body and stands 8.7cm / 3.4ins high. All together the set weighs a hefty 1.07kg / 37.85oz.
Each piece is marked on the underside of the foot with EPNS for silver plate, the letter A for high quality silver plate, the G B & S makers' mark for George Bowen & Sons and their longbow trademark.
