Yamaha SL450S Studio Lord 1982 Les Paul Standard Model
This is a rare 1982 Yamaha SL450S, a unique Yamaha-made Les Paul-style guitar. The SL series originally featured a headstock shape similar to the Yamaha SG when introduced in 1976, but in 1982, it was redesigned with an open-book headstock, making this early model with that distinctive feature highly collectible. The SL450S boasts a set neck and equipped with covered humbucking pickups, embodying classic rock guitar design. Yamaha's craftsmanship and technological expertise are evident in its solid build quality, which remains impressive today.
The guitar features Yamaha's powerful Covered Humbucker L-II pickups, known for their rich tone and compatibility with overdrive and distortion. Whether using lighter gauge strings like 09-42 or 08-38, the pickups deliver robust sound. The bridge pickup provides a sharp, punchy rock tone, while the neck pickup offers sustain-rich, soulful sounds. In clean settings, it transitions from jazzy tones with the front pickup to natural, three-dimensional acoustic-like sounds in the middle position, showcasing Yamaha’s attention to tonal versatility.
The tuning stability has been improved with a replacement of the original Kluson-style tuners with Gotoh Rotomatic tuners, a popular upgrade among vintage guitar enthusiasts inspired by Jimmy Page. The guitar weighs approximately 4.45kg and features a maple top with an agathis back, with a maple neck and rosewood fingerboard.
This Yamaha SL450S is a remarkable vintage instrument that combines classic design, versatile tone, and reliable performance, perfect for collectors and players seeking a unique piece of guitar history.
