The ICP Library of Photographers is published in collaboration with the International Fund for Concerned Photography, Inc., under the general direction of its Executive Director, Cornell Capa.
Each monograph in the series contains a generous and representative selection of work by a photographer who uses his camera as a tool of social conscience.
Each book also contains essays on the photographer and his work, with many new and previously unpublished photographs and writings.
"Chim picked up his camera the way a doctor takes his stethoscope out of his bag-applying his diagnosis to the condition of the heart..." -Henri Cartier-Bresson
Passionately anti-fascist, David Seymour-"Chim"-documented the political mood of pre-war France and trained his eye and his camera on the Spanish Civil War.
Then at the end of World War II this gentle and compassionate man embarked on what was to be the most significant segment of his photographic work. Travelling through war-torn Europe, he showed us the faces of the war's most innocent victims: the maimed and homeless children left in the wake of destruction.
It is these pictures that form the main part of this book, and the testament of a war-hating man who was himself accidentally killed by a sniper's bullet, a few hours after the armistice in the 1956 Suez crisis.
