PENGUIN BOOKS
You can eat your way Round the World in Eighty Dishes with Lesley Blanch.
From Carmen Chestnut Soup, in Europe, you can go to Canada for Cod's Roe Pie, followed by Honourable Stranger's Chop Suey, in China, with perhaps Bamyia-Figs in Egypt before the Little Pigs of Heaven in Spain.
Then for a cup of Eskimo Coffee, made with eggs.
These strange and delicious recipes are ideal for the kitchen-chair traveller.
'One of the most fascinating cookery books ever written.
She is a gourmet who has travelled far and wide and so has been able to produce a charming guide to good food, decorated with her own engaging drawings. There is nothing to be said about this book to those who have palates but "Get it"-Lady
'It is a high moment for the habitual reader of cookery books to find one that is really different. This is such a book' Sunday Times
Lesley Blanch is the wife of Romain Gary, the French diplomat and novelist.
She was bom in London in 1907 and studied art at the Slade School, but after working as a book illustrator, theatrical designer, and caricaturist she switched to journalism and has never regretted it.
For seven years she was Features Editor of Vogue and then became a free-lance film critic, essayist, and columnist.
She finds that noise "insulates her and prefers to work in a noisy café in any hot climate.
Failing this she likes to write in bed, with a flood of classical music in the background.
Ideal conditions of work (large desk or quiet room) disturb her, like telephones and social life, and she keeps no special hours, although she tends to write at night and all night
Apart in from her interest in and understanding of cooking, Lesley Blanch likes travelling, the Russian Classics, opera, and ballet.
