Background: Films and Filming was a prominent British monthly film magazine launched in October 1954 by Hansom Books (founded by Philip Dosse). It ran continuously (with a brief pause around 1980–1981) until it finally ceased publication in the early 1990s. 

Editorial Focus: Unlike standard fan magazines of the era, it treated cinema as a serious art form, featuring in-depth critical reviews, technical credits (directors, cinematographers, producers), and extensive coverage of international art-house cinema (such as works by Claude Chabrol and Bernardo Bertolucci). 

Clandestine Queer Space: Beneath its mainstream cinematic respectability, the magazine served as a vital, coded cultural lifeline and safe space for gay men in the UK during decades when homosexuality was criminalized. It featured profiles of sexually ambiguous actors (like Dirk Bogarde), homoerotic photography, and discreet "bachelor" contact ads in the back pages. 

Importance to the Film Industry: It filled a crucial gap between high-brow academic film journals and commercial fan magazines, giving serious filmgoers, students, and practitioners rigorous critical discourse and global perspectives on emerging post-war cinema.
