Antique wicker-wrapped glass demijohn (or carboy), typically dating from the early-to-mid 20th century. The demijohn features a green-tinted glass neck protruding from the top, which is sealed with a natural cork stopper. The neck of the demijohn shows a slightly uneven, rustic top with bubbles and other irregularities typical of older hand-blown techniques.
The woven brown casing entirely covers the lower body of the demijohn and has a handle starting from the bottle’s neck, providing both a rustic, decorative look and historical functionality.
These bottles were traditionally produced in European countries like Italy, France, and Spain to store and safely transport wine, spirits, or oils. The hand-woven willow or rattan wicker casing acted as a protective bumper to keep the glass from shattering during transit.
The demijohn measures approximately 13.25 inches tall (not including cork) and has a 4.5 inch diameter base. It has a chip to the jar mouth and broken wicker strands as shown in photos.
