Offered here is a first edition copy of 'The Katanga Circus: A Detailed Account of Three UN Wars' by Mugur Valahu, published in 1964 by Robert Speller & Sons, Publishers, Inc., of New York. The copyright page explicitly states 'First edition,' making this a true first printing of this uncommon and historically significant work.
Mugur Valahu was a Romanian-born journalist, lawyer, and Cold War exile with a remarkable background. Born in Bucharest in 1920, he served as a lieutenant in the Royal Rumanian Army on the Russian front, earned two doctorates in jurisprudence, worked for Radio Free Europe and the BBC, and eventually settled in the United States. His firsthand experience with Communist takeover in Romania gave him a unique lens through which to analyze the political chaos unfolding in the Congo and Katanga in the early 1960s.
The book provides a detailed and opinionated account of the three UN military operations in Katanga during the Congolese secession crisis, examining the roles of the United Nations, Belgian mining interests (Union Minière), African political leadership, and Cold War geopolitics. It is a rare primary source perspective sympathetic to Katangese independence and critical of UN intervention.
The book is in Good condition overall. The dust jacket shows notable wear with chips, tears, and creasing at the corners and spine ends, along with some soiling and fading. The green cloth hardcover boards beneath are intact and structurally sound. The interior endpapers display age-toning and light foxing or moisture spotting, while the text pages remain generally clean and legible. The binding is tight with no loose pages detected.
No inscriptions, bookplates, library markings, or ownership stamps are present. This is a clean copy from a private collection. A scarce title on an important chapter of African Cold War history, ideal for collectors of 20th-century political history, African studies, or UN history.
