◎ CONDITION

Very Fine (VF), with strong reverse detail.

Liber’s profile, ivy wreath and hair remain identifiable, with wear and softness across the cheek, neck and higher points. Pegasus shows clear wings, body and legs, and the Q. TITI tablet is readable.

Both sides display uneven gray toning and textured surfaces, with scattered small marks and an irregular flan. The obverse portrait sits close to the right edge; portions of the border are incomplete. Minor edge irregularities are visible.

Using the factors considered in ancient-coin grading, the strike preserves the principal devices while centering, wear and surface texture affect overall quality.

⌛ HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE

Issued in 90 BC during the Social War, this denarius belongs to a pivotal period in the Roman Republic’s struggle with its Italian allies over citizenship. Quintus Titius was a Republican moneyer, rather than a king or emperor; his biography is poorly documented.

The youthful ivy-wreathed Liber represents the Roman deity associated with wine and fertility, closely linked with Bacchus. Pegasus provides a striking mythological reverse.

This coin is categorized as a Crawford# 341/2, distinct from Titius’s related bearded-head denarius, Crawford 341/1. Together, the designs and signed tablet offer an appealing example of Republican religious imagery and moneyer identification.
