1941 George Leonard Herter Professional Fly Tying and Tackle Making Manual – Second Edition – Heavily Annotated Working Fly Tier's Copy

Original 1941 Second Edition of George Leonard Herter's classic:

Professional Fly Tying and Tackle Making Manual and Manufacturers' Guide

By George Leonard Herter
Copyright 1941, Herter's, Waseca, Minnesota
Printed by The Brown Publishing Company, Waseca, Minnesota
Edited by Marvin Peter Spittler
Stated Second Edition

Approximately 215 pages, extensively illustrated with period fly patterns, tying methods, materials, tackle construction and lure-making information.

What makes this particular copy especially interesting is its history as an actual working fly-tying reference book.

The previous owner extensively personalized and supplemented the manual with handwritten fly-tying notes, recipes and material information. Numerous period printed advertisements/catalog clippings for feathers, hair, silk, floss and other fly-tying materials have been pasted onto relevant pages throughout the book.

Also found inside are additional period reference materials, including a handwritten 1939 Memoranda sheet containing fly-pattern/tying notes and a small vintage color fly-pattern reference card.

Rather than being a clean bookshelf copy, this appears to have belonged to a serious period fly tier who actively used and expanded the book as his own working reference.

Topics include:

Fly tying techniques
Dry and wet flies
Streamers
Bass bugs
The Mississippi Bug
Hair-bodied flies, mice, moths and frogs
Feathers, hackle, fur, silk and tying materials
Fly patterns and recipes
Lure and tackle making
Fishing entomology
Manufacturers and tackle materials

Condition: Well-used vintage working copy. Covers show considerable age wear, creasing and surface crazing. Pages have age toning and handling wear. Numerous pages contain period handwritten notes and pasted-in reference/catalog material. Additional loose vintage notes/reference pieces remain with the book. Please examine photographs carefully for condition.

Nothing has been removed or cleaned up — the period notes, clippings and reference material are being left exactly as found.

A particularly interesting early Herter reference for the collector of vintage fly fishing, fly tying, antique fishing tackle, Herter's memorabilia and American angling history.

Original period piece — not a reproduction.
