In need of substantial restoration/repair. Significant cracking to the wooden case, including cracks towards both sides of the domed top. The writing-surface fabric is torn through the centre and has become unstuck, leaving the upper writing section loose. Interior compartment/divider is loose and falls out. One screw hinge is loose. Various age-related scratches, marks, wear and losses are present. No key. Sold as a restoration project.
Antique Victorian portable travelling writing box/writing slope, dating to approximately 1860–1880. The figured walnut case has an attractive domed top and a shaped/scalloped brass keyhole escutcheon to the front.
Opening to form a writing slope, the fitted interior retains a black writing surface decorated with an ornate gilt border and corner motifs. The stationery area incorporates divided storage for pens and writing accessories, together with a glass inkwell with brass-coloured top. Brass hinges and fittings complete this handsome piece of Victorian writing equipment.
