A wonderfully characterful vintage Giuseppe Armani "Gulliver's World" figurine, depicting a mischievous-looking young fisherman proudly clutching an enormous fish.
Standing approximately 21 cm tall, the figure has all the humour and exaggerated character associated with the Gulliver's World series – from the boy's sideways glance and cheeky expression to his oversized boots and enormous catch.
The detailing is excellent throughout, including the boy's hands, clothing, facial features, fish scales and fins, together with the wonderfully detailed fishing scene around his feet, complete with hook, line and small bait/ground details.
The sculpture is finished in subtle earthy cream, ochre and brown tones with deliberately darker shading worked into the recesses, giving it an attractive aged appearance.
It stands on its original turned wooden display base.
The figure bears the G. Armani signature moulded into the front of the sculpture.
It also retains part of its original foil label reading:
"GULLIVER'S WORLD by G. Armani"
The Gulliver's World range is associated with Italian sculptor Giuseppe Armani, with other documented pieces from the collection dating particularly from the early 1980s. Examples include dated 1981, 1982 and 1984 pieces.
This example is in very good used vintage condition.
The figurine had been stored away for a number of years in a dusty environment and was recently rediscovered during a house-sale clearance.
It has been inspected but not subjected to aggressive cleaning, particularly because of the detailed finish and surviving original label.
Please study the photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the description.
Giuseppe Armani's Gulliver's World collection concentrated heavily on wonderfully expressive childhood subjects – children fishing, playing, making music and getting into various adventures.
The series included a number of fishing-themed designs, and surviving examples are now generally described as retired. A larger 12-inch "Boy Gone Fishing" Gulliver's World figure, for example, is documented as a 1980s piece, while other Gulliver's World figures can be specifically dated to 1981–84.
This smaller boy with his oversized fish is particularly appealing because the humour of the scene is immediately obvious – he looks extremely pleased with himself!
