Topdog Presents: Always interesting stuff!

Offered here is John Berkey: Painted Space, published in 1991 by the Friedlander Publishing Group of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (ISBN 0-9627154-1-7). This large-format softcover collects the work of one of the most influential science fiction painters of the twentieth century. The text is by Sharon Berkey, the introduction is by publisher Michael Friedlander, and the original $19.95 cover price is on the back.

John Berkey (1932–2008) was a Minnesota illustrator whose loose, painterly spaceships changed how the future looked. His massive, glittering starships appeared on countless paperback covers, calendars and magazine pieces, and his style strongly influenced a generation of film concept artists and model makers. He also painted some of the best-known movie art of the 1970s. The back cover reproduces his famous poster for King Kong (1976), showing Kong astride the World Trade Center. Inside is his art for The Towering Inferno (1974), with the preliminary sketches of Steve McQueen and Paul Newman. The back-cover copy notes that his work ran "from King Kong to Star Wars," and he painted early promotional art for the original Star Wars.

The book is filled with full-color plates, including spacecraft, planetary landscapes, and his cover painting for the National Geographic book Our Universe (1980). Many plates carry Berkey's own comments on how each piece was made. The front cover shows one of his classic scenes: a huge white ship lifting off above a spaceport against snow-capped mountains and a sky full of planets.

The book is in excellent condition. The covers are bright, with light rubbing and minor edge and corner wear, and the spine is sound. The pages are clean and bright, with no writing or tears seen. Please see all photos, which are part of the description.
