REFERENCE: Additional Comments: This peaceful plein air & impressionist landscape oil painting by Mary Darter Coleman masterfully captures the rugged serenity of the High Sierras with bold, expressive brushstrokes. A majestic granite peak, bathed in the soft glow of alpine light, rises sharply against a clear sky, its dramatic facets mirrored by the textured impasto. Below, a pristine turquoise lake creates a vibrant contrast against the cool tones of the surrounding rocky terrain. Weather-beaten pines and resilient greenery fringe the shoreline, anchoring the composition and emphasizing the raw, untamed beauty of the early twentieth-century American West! Mary Suehanna Darter Coleman (1893–1956) was a prominent twentieth-century American painter whose career spanned the regional art movements of Texas and the celebrated plein air tradition of Southern California. Born in Fort Worth, Texas, she demonstrated early artistic promise and earned a degree from Texas Christian University. Seeking to refine her technical skills, she traveled to New York City to study at the prestigious Art Students League under renowned instructors like George Bridgman and John Fabian Carlson. Upon returning to the South and Midwest, she established herself as an influential art educator, teaching at Midland College, Texas Christian University, and Phillips University in Oklahoma. A permanent relocation to Los Angeles in 1925, following her marriage to fellow landscape artist Harvey B. Coleman, marked the definitive turning point in her creative evolution. Immersed in the vibrant West Coast art scene, she studied under legendary California Impressionist masters Edgar Payne and Jack Wilkinson Smith. From them, she absorbed the signature techniques of the plein air style, learning to utilize thick impasto textures, energetic palette knife work, and brilliant, light-filled color harmonies. She dedicated the height of her career to capturing the raw, untamed majesty of the High Sierras and the sweeping California deserts. Throughout her lifetime, Coleman actively exhibited her paintings and graphics at competitive venues, including the Texas State Fair, the Los Angeles County Fair, and with the Artists of the Southwest. She maintained prominent memberships in highly influential fine art institutions, including the California Art Club, the Los Angeles Art Association, and the Women Painters of the West. Following her passing in Los Angeles on December 17, 1956, she left behind a coveted artistic legacy, and her vibrant landscapes remain highly sought after by collectors of early American regionalism and Western art.
