Full of charm and gentle character, this delightful Soviet-era porcelain lion cub captures the innocent curiosity of youth in a beautifully observed animal study. Measuring approximately 11 cm tall, the cub is shown seated with alert ears and expressive hand-painted eyes, its warm honey-toned coat contrasting elegantly against the creamy white porcelain body.
Created by the renowned Lomonosov Porcelain Factory (LFZ), this charming piece exemplifies the exceptional quality and artistry that made Soviet animal figurines highly collectible around the world.
Whether displayed amongst a collection of vintage animalier sculptures or gifted to a wildlife enthusiast, this sweet lion cub brings a touch of nostalgia and craftsmanship to any setting.
Founded in 1744 by Empress Elizabeth of Russia, the Imperial Porcelain Factory in St Petersburg is Russia's oldest porcelain manufacturer and one of the oldest in Europe. Following the Russian Revolution, it became known as the Leningrad Porcelain Factory (LFZ – ЛФЗ) and produced some of the Soviet Union's most celebrated decorative porcelain.
This particular model was designed by the highly respected Soviet animal sculptor Boris Vorobyov, whose realistic yet affectionate portrayals of wildlife became iconic examples of twentieth-century Russian porcelain artistry. His works continue to attract collectors worldwide for their expressive qualities and superb modelling.
The base carries two important marks:
Importantly, the red colour of the mark signifies First Quality production, representing the highest manufacturing grade issued by the factory. Blue marks generally indicated second quality, whilst green marks denoted third quality pieces.
Based upon the export mark and stamp style, this lion cub most likely dates to the 1970s–1980s Soviet export period.
Boris Vorobyov's animal sculptures were so highly regarded that many remained in continuous production for decades. Today, authentic LFZ animal figures are increasingly collected not only as decorative pieces but also as important examples of Soviet design history.
Your figurine will be carefully wrapped using protective materials and dispatched via a tracked and insured delivery service to ensure it arrives safely.
