76 Ships for the Navy

The call today for ships emphasizes the impor-tance of Bethlehem's shipbuilding activities in this company's work in the National Defense Program. Including the recently-launched 35,000-ton Massachusetts, Bethlehem's construc-tion for the Navy reaches a total of 76 vessels, ranging in size from the Massachusetts to light cruisers and destroyers.

But fighting ships for the Navy are not the whole story of the shipbuilding program now rapidly moving forward in Bethlehem yards. This company is also building vessels for the Merchant Marine, Ninety tankers and cargo ships are now either in the blueprint stage or taking form in Bethlehem yards on both the East and West Coasts. Three of these merchant vessels the Liberty Ship Patrick Henry, a C-1 cargo ship and a tanker-were recently launched

on the same day at three Bethlehem Yards. The necessity for building both naval and

merchant ships, and building them quickly, is one which Bethlehem is well equipped to meet. Men are working and planning in Bethlehem yards now who have as their background the fine craftsmanship of the builders of the famous clipper ships; many of these men played an important part in Bethlehem's shipbuilding achievements during the First World War.

Such a reservoir of skill and experience is help-ing Bethlehem to meet the formidable demands. of the present program. When the emergency came, the key men needed to direct expanded facilities and stepped-up operations were already a part of this company's organization.

Bethlehem is building ships and building them ahead of schedule on both the East and West Coasts. Building ships for the Two-Ocean Navy and cargo vessels to carry the supplies and materials of war so vital to national security.
