Beautiful large vintage Mexican mother and child painting in its substantial original-style carved wood frame.
The artwork depicts a seated mother gently holding a baby on her lap, rendered in warm yellow, brown, green, blue and red tones against an atmospheric dark background.
This is an especially attractive example of vintage Mexican decorative / folk art, with the mother-and-child subject giving the piece a strong sense of warmth and family.
The painting is on stretched canvas rather than a modern paper print. The exposed reverse shows the aged canvas, wooden stretcher construction and old mounting hardware.
The large wood frame is a major part of the appeal of this piece. It features carved repeating decorative detailing around the outer border, an aged brown and bronze-toned finish, inner wood molding and a wide fabric-covered liner surrounding the artwork.
The reverse of the frame also retains a partially visible old Mexican maker/origin stamp.
Approximate measurements:
Overall framed size: 28" wide x 32" tall
Visible artwork: approximately 18" wide x 23" tall
Please see the measurement photos for the most accurate dimensions.
The construction, materials and naturally aged surfaces are consistent with a vintage mid-century piece. Based on comparable Mexican carved frames and artwork, this type of construction is commonly associated with approximately the 1950s-1970s period.
No readable artist signature was found on the visible front of the painting, so the artist is being left unidentified rather than making an unsupported attribution.
The artwork and frame both show genuine age and wear, including surface marks, discoloration, patina, small areas of paint loss and wear to the frame and liner. The reverse shows considerable aging to the canvas and mounting materials. These characteristics are visible in the photographs and are part of the piece's vintage appearance.
A substantial and highly decorative piece of vintage Mexican wall art with excellent presence. The combination of the large mother-and-child composition, aged canvas and ornate carved Mexican wood frame makes this an especially attractive piece for collectors of Mexican art, Latin American decor, mid-century interiors, folk art and vintage hacienda-style furnishings.
Painting and frame are being sold together exactly as photographed.
