New Old Stock.

Superb original vintage J. & G. Coughtrie Ltd of Glasgow SY-6 compact oval bulkhead light, with the aluminium body casting marked A104.

This is particularly desirable as it comes with its original Coughtrie cardboard box, which identifies it as an aluminium alloy weatherproof bulkhead fitting, List No. SY.6, with grey finish, clear prismatic cover and B.C. bayonet-cap lamp holder.

The SY-6 is a classic Coughtrie design originally produced in the 1950s. Coughtrie has actually reintroduced the SY-6 in recent years, describing the current version as a recreation from the original 1950s engineering drawings.

This older example retains its substantial cast-metal body, heavy clear prismatic glass diffuser and ceramic bayonet lamp holder. The body measures approximately 22cm long, broadly matching the dimensions of the current SY-6. Modern versions are approximately 220–221mm long, 103mm wide and around 115–118mm deep.

The fitting appears to be new old stock / unused old stock, although naturally it shows some storage wear, small marks and paint chips from age. The original cardboard packaging has considerable age-related wear, crushing and splitting but is a great surviving feature and adds significantly to the industrial/vintage appeal.

The glass is in very good condition with no obvious cracks or major chips visible in the photographs.

A particularly attractive piece for an industrial, Art Deco, mid-century, factory, workshop, maritime or architectural interior.
