Description

These Zuni Sunface stud earrings are a wonderful little study in patience and talent! Mother of pearl forms the lower face, turquoise and coral divide the upper field, and jet creates the strong black geometry, all hand fitted within narrow sterling channels. The hand cutting of these tiny pieces would have been a major task in itself. Each fragment has to be shaped to meet both the silver framework and the piece beside it, and at this miniature scale even a slight unevenness would show. The Sunface is one of the enduring designs in Zuni jewelry, traditionally tied to the life-giving sun and balance, and the classic turquoise, coral, jet, and shell palette gives these tiny rounds unmistakable Pueblo character.
