1943 Malaya WW2 Japanese Occupation Kuala Kangsar Censor Grik Perak Money Lender Tamil Cover

Front Description

This is a Japanese occupation–period censored business item from Malaya, on buff-orange card or envelope stock. The pre-printed heading belongs to a Chettiar-style money lender in Upper Perak. It was sent to a Tamil recipient in Taiping and carries a Japanese censor handstamp in violet.

The printed heading, in black, reads:

"From
S. M. T. ARUMUGAM PILLAY,
MONEY LENDER,
No. 2, JALAN TAKONG DATOH, GRIK, UPPER PERAK, [F. M. S.]"

The street address "JALAN TAKONG DATOH" has been struck through in ink. Above it, a handwritten replacement reads "35 Bozzolo Road" (as it appears). A double rule runs beneath the heading, and "To" is printed at the left.

The address is handwritten in black ink. The upper lines are in Tamil script. The first line carries a sacred opening mark or invocation and numerals. The next lines give the recipient's name and honorifics in Tamil, part of which is crossed out and underlined. Below this the address continues in English:

"A.O.S. Periaiah Pillay Avl" ("Avl" is the abbreviation of the Tamil honorific Avargal)
"No 163. Marked Road" (sic, for Market Road)
"Tipping" (sic, for Taiping)
"Perak"

"Taiping" has been added in green ink at lower left with an underline. This was probably a correction by postal staff for the misspelt town name.

The Japanese censor mark is a large rectangular violet handstamp on the left. It reads "検閲濟" (Ken'etsu-zumi – Censored / Passed by Censor), with a vertical side panel reading "アラカンサ局". This is the Japanese katakana rendering of (Kuala) Kangsar, followed by 局 (office), so it identifies the Kuala Kangsar censorship or post office. A handwritten censor number "2" appears in the upper compartment of the box.

No postage stamp or postmark is visible on this piece.

Condition: the card is punched with a filing hole at top centre and has a small notch or loss at the top right corner. There are brown stains across the upper half, some toning, and a rough, worn lower right edge.

Back Description

The reverse carries handwritten accounting calculations in black ink, apparently the money lender's working figures. The writing is rotated sideways on the card.

The main column of figures reads, as far as legible: 2.63, 2.07, 1.80, 1.81½, 1.30½, 1.31, 1.31½, 1.32, 1.33, 1.33½, 1.34, 1.35, 1.35½, 1.36, 1.37, 1.37½, 1.38, 1.38½, 1.23, .79, .79½. The "½" values are written with Tamil-style fraction marks.

A side calculation reads: 29.31 / 369.79 / 339.10, with a short Tamil annotation beside it.

Lower calculations read:
38.96 + 129.53 + 170.61 = 339.10
170.61 − 29.31 = 141.30
29.79 / 168.49 / 141.30

The figures appear to be rates, instalments or interest calculations.

The reverse also has the punched filing hole, a small notch at the top left, dark spots near the top right, and overall toning.

Estimated Era

This piece dates to about 1942–1945, during the Japanese occupation of Malaya. The Japanese "検閲濟" censor handstamp naming the Kuala Kangsar office in katakana (アラカンサ局) is the key evidence. Civil mail in occupied Malaya was routinely censored at local offices, and katakana town names on censor chops are a recognised feature of Perak occupation mail.

The printed heading gives the pre-war address "[F. M. S.]" (Federated Malay States). This shows the stationery was printed before the war and was used up during the occupation. The crossed-out street address and handwritten new address fit the disruption of the period.

Items like this are highly collectable. They bring together Japanese occupation censorship, the postal history of Upper Perak (Grik and Kuala Kangsar) and Taiping, and the history of the Tamil Chettiar money-lending community in Malaya.
