The Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen (BRT) was one of the most powerful, influential, and largest labor organizations in American history. The organization operated simultaneously as a combative labor union fighting for worker rights and a fraternal benefits society that protected families in an era when railroading was a deadly profession.

Every town with a rail yard had its own "Lodge." The men of Viaduct Lodge No. 344 in Jersey Shore, PA, were the specific local workers operating the trains on the Beech Creek District and the Pennsylvania Division of the New York Central Railroad.
