AFTER GIOVANNI FRANCESCO BARBIERI, IL GUERCINO (1591–1666)

The Penitent Magdalene

Probably 19th Century – Oil on Canvas

A striking and beautifully composed 19th-century oil painting after Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, known as Il Guercino, depicting The Penitent Magdalene.

The Magdalene is shown in a contemplative pose, her gaze lowered and her head resting gently upon her hand. She is depicted with long flowing hair and draped in rich, dark fabrics, while the open book and crown of thorns beside her reinforce the devotional and penitential subject.

The dramatic use of light against the deep, atmospheric background is characteristic of the Italian Baroque tradition, creating a strong sense of depth and chiaroscuro.

The painting is presented in a substantial decorative frame and would make an impressive addition to a traditional, classical or period-style interior.
