June 28, 1778, It was the longest single-day battle of the war and proved that Washington's newly disciplined troops—trained by Baron von Steuben at Valley Forge—could stand toe-to-toe with British regulars. Near Monmouth Court House (modern-day Freehold and Manalapan, New Jersey. The intense fighting lasted until dusk before the British quietly slipped away under the cover of darkness to continue their march to New York. The battle famously popularized the legend of Mary Ludwig Hays ("Molly Pitcher"), who reportedly took her fallen husband's place operating a cannon. Info from Wikipedia.
