A Wixárika (Huichol) beaded squirrel from the family workshop of Miguel Díaz Carrillo, Wixárika name Otsiekame Hayuama, a third-generation Huichol artisan in Guadalajara, Jalisco. I bought it directly from the family at their table in the Centro Histórico and paid their asking price without negotiation. It is the same family and the same provenance as the beaded rabbit, iguana and jaguar heads in my shop.
The work
Every bead is set by hand, one at a time, into a bed of beeswax and pine resin, in the ancestral technique. Nothing is glued in sheets and nothing is machine set. A great rainbow flower medallion fills each flank, a concentric diamond crowns the back, and the curled tail is worked in blues with a black-dotted flower. The rows follow the curves of the body tightly, and the color changes are clean from every angle.
Size and condition
It measures 7 inches long, 5 inches high and 4 inches wide. It is new, straight from the artisans, with full bead coverage and no loose or missing beads. One photograph shows the squirrel staged; only the squirrel is included.
Appraisal
Graded B. The beadwork is tight and well composed, and the squirrel is a charming, less common subject. What holds it below the top grade is size: smaller figures compete in a crowded field. Gallery replacement value is $525, what this piece would cost through a gallery, for insurance and estate purposes.

The price includes DHL Express shipping anywhere in the world, with tracking, packed by Diseños de Cartón in Guadalajara.
