Three original book plate extractions from the 1923 Bodley Head first edition of "The Golden Asse of Lucius Apuleius," illustrated by Jean de Bosschère, one of the most collectible illustrated books of the Art Nouveau/Decadent era. The captions and chapter citations are printed below each image, and the artist's name "Bosschère" is signed within each plate. The three prints are: "He Had a Fine Wooden Sword" (Book First, Chapter VIII), showing a rotund enthroned figure surrounded by a chaotic crowd of revelers in Bosschère's dense black-and-white woodcut style; "Even Lucifer Broke Loose" (Book Third, Chapter XXVII), a bacchanalian scene of near-nude figures with a horned devil and a trident, unmistakably erotic in the Beardsley tradition; and "Seeing I Can No More Worry Along Without a Woman Than a Blind Man Can Without a Cane" (Book Third, Chapter IX), a dramatically shadowed archway scene with three figures.
