Picasa is the photo organizer and editor Google built for Windows, and the one that most people still remember. It reads the pictures already on a computer and shows them as one library. It edits them without ever writing over an original: a saved edit becomes a new version and the original file stays exactly as it was.
Nothing here needs an account and nothing needs a connection. Install it, point it at the folders where your pictures already live, and it starts building the library. No special knowledge is required, and no previous experience with photo software is assumed.
Google published its Picasa help as a set of web pages. The whole of it has been gathered into one document that travels with the pack, so the program can be learned with no connection at all.
Google published the 256 MB memory and 100 MB disk figures for the 3.0 line.

Which version should I install?
On a current Windows machine, use picasa39-setup.exe, version 3.9.141.259, which is the final release Google published. On an older Windows machine, picasa38-setup.exe or picasa3-setup.exe suit it better. On a Mac, use picasamac39.dmg. On Linux, use the Debian package that matches your processor, the amd64 one for 64-bit and the i386 one for 32-bit.
Does this work on a Mac?
Yes, with one important detail. The Mac build is a 32-bit Intel program, so it needs an Intel Mac running macOS 10.6 Snow Leopard through macOS 10.14 Mojave. macOS 10.15 dropped 32-bit programs altogether, and Apple Silicon Macs cannot run them at all. To check which Mac you have, open the Apple menu and choose About This Mac: a Chip line means Apple Silicon and a Processor line means Intel.
Is the manual included?
Google published its Picasa help as a set of web pages, and the whole of it is on the media as a PDF of eight pages and as a web page you can open in any browser. It covers reading the pictures already on your computer, organizing them, editing them, emailing and exporting them, making slideshows, collages and movies, and choosing which file types Picasa sees.
Do I lose my original photos when I edit them?
No. Picasa never writes over an original. When you save an edit, it creates a new version of the picture with the changes applied and moves the original into a hidden folder called .picasaoriginals, so the untouched file is still on the disk. Saving to a new file or exporting leaves the original completely alone.
Will Picasa put my photos online?
No. Picasa works entirely offline now. The upload and sharing side, Picasa Web Albums, and the programming interface behind it were all switched off by Google, and every feature that works on the files on your own computer still works. Nothing is uploaded and nothing leaves your machine.
Which photo formats does it read?
JPEG, TIFF, BMP, PNG, TGA, PSD and non-animated GIF for pictures, plus a long list of video formats for playback. It also reads RAW files from Adobe, Canon, Casio, Fuji, Hasselblad, Kodak, Leica, Minolta, Nikon, Olympus, Panasonic, Pentax, Ricoh, Samsung, Sigma and Sony cameras.
Does this software need a product key or activation?
No. Picasa needs no product key, no activation step, no registration and no account. It installs and runs on its own, offline.
Do I need to copy the pack to my computer first?
For DVD orders, copy the pack folder to your computer (for example, your Desktop) first, then run the installer from there. DVDs have much slower read speeds than USB drives, and a DVD install run directly from the disc will be slow.
