Item: US Army AEF WW1 Air Service Collar Disc Badged M-1917 Wool Service & Combat Tunic
Markings: "WANAMAKER & BROWN / Contract October 31, 1917 / Philadelphia Depot Q.M.C." maker and date label on the inside of the front right hem lining.
Measurements: The tunic measures 21" from underarm to underarm across the chest, 18" from shoulder to shoulder across the back, 29 1/2" from the collar/body seam to the bottom of the hem down the back, and with a 25" sleeve from the shoulder to the end of the cuff.
Condition: This tunic is in Good Condition. A small moth hole in the lower left front pocket. Some light mothing at the lower right front pocket. A moth hole in the lower right sleeve. A small moth hole in the upper right chest. Some fading and loose edge stitching to the maker and date label inside. Two small moth holes in the lower back right sleeve. A small moth hole in the lower back left sleeve. A small moth hole in the upper left back. A sizable moth hole in the back left neck. Features beautiful screw back darkened bronze "US" and Air Service BOS "winged propeller" collar discs. Classic short "standing" collar with a fully functional dual metal "hook and eye" neck closure, 4 front pocket design, OD wool serge construction, crisp khaki cotton lining, and all of the original "American eagle" embossed darkened brass buttons throughout.
Historical Background: When the United States entered WW1 in April 1917, the first deadly air war in history had been raging over Europe for nearly three years. Some American pilots had flown in combat for the French as part of the "Lafayette Escadrille", and these hardened air combat veterans formed the core of the fledgling US Army Air Service.
