This volume is a complete color facsimile of the Sanborn Map Company's Insurance Maps of Lorain, Lorain County, Ohio, published in New York in August 1918. All thirty-eight sheets of the original edition are reproduced here in full color, preserving the Sanborn color key that distinguishes brick, frame, stone, and fireproof construction at a glance.
Surveyed at the height of the First World War industrial boom, when Lorain counted 40,000 residents, the atlas records the city building by building where the Black River meets Lake Erie: street addresses, construction materials, building heights and uses, business names, water mains, and hydrants. Lorain's heavy industry dominates the sheets, including the vast National Tube Company works along the Baltimore & Ohio corridor, the American Ship Building Company yards on the Black River, the Cromwell Steel Company, the Thew Automatic Shovel Company, the B. & O. car shops and round house, and the Lorain & Elyria Electric Railway power house and car barns. The maps also document the Sheffield Land Company subdivisions of South Lorain, Oakwood Park, the Schlitz and Pilsner brewing depots, and the churches of the city's immigrant neighborhoods — Polish, Slovak, Greek Catholic, Hungarian, and Italian congregations all named on the sheets. A full street and specials index appears on the title sheet.
An essential reference for genealogists, house historians, and collectors of Lorain County history.
