Offered is an original August 10, 1888 business letter written on the illustrated Cumberland Depot of the Robert Portner Brewing Company letterhead. The sheet measures approximately standard business-letter size of the period and features an attractive engraved brewery view at upper left along with prominent advertising for the brewery's celebrated “Tivoli” Lager Beer.
The letter originates from Cumberland, Maryland, and is addressed to DENNIS WEGERT of Somerset, Pennsylvania. The brief handwritten message reads in part:
“Please inform us if you can make these two Bills…”
and requests an early reply.
The letterhead is especially desirable for collectors of brewing history. Robert Portner (1837–1906) built one of the most important brewing enterprises in the Mid-Atlantic region. His Alexandria, Virginia brewery became nationally known for its lager beer production during the late nineteenth century. The illustrated stationery prominently advertises the company's celebrated Tivoli Lager Beer and identifies Geo. Hering & Son as sole agents at the Cumberland depot.
An excellent piece of pre-Prohibition brewery ephemera combining brewing history, advertising, Maryland history, and Pennsylvania genealogy. The recipient's full name is clearly present, adding appeal for family historians and local researchers.
