Offered here from the dougfinds collection of curated
fashion, accessories, clothing, collectibles, and unique finds is this beautifully
detailed Ceramica Conimbriga hand-painted Portuguese ceramic serving tray,
decorated in the traditional Sec XVII — 17th-century-inspired — style.
This is one of those
pieces that rewards a closer look.
The rectangular tray is
covered with extraordinarily dense hand-painted decoration: scrolling green
foliage, tiny multicolored flowers, geometric lattice panels and ornamental
borders surrounding a lively collection of animals and birds. A rabbit appears
among the flowers at lower left, while colorful birds occupy and fly through
the elaborate garden-like composition.
The two integral handles
continue the decoration with blue floral motifs, and the entire piece is
finished in a rich glossy glaze.
The
underside is exceptionally well documented and hand marked:
The handwritten date
establishes the piece as completed January 23, 2002, with Fatima
identified on the underside as the decorator/artisan.
Please
note: “Sec XVII” refers to the
historic 17th-century style/design tradition represented by the decoration;
it is not the manufacture date of this particular piece.
Approximate
measurements:
CONDITION: Good, clean pre-owned condition with a
beautifully glossy surface and strong, vibrant hand-painted color.
The small edge
imperfections do little to diminish what makes this piece special—the intricate
hand decoration remains the star of the show.
A particularly attractive
example of Portuguese Conimbriga pottery, equally suited for serving,
display, a colorful tabletop centerpiece or a collection of hand-painted
Portuguese ceramics.
