EUGENE  DELESTRE

( 1862 - 1919 )

Eugène Delestre (1862–1919) painted this sunlit village scene around 1915, a quiet corner of rural France untouched by the war then raging to the north. An orchard of young fruit trees fills the left of the canvas, their foliage built up from dense, flickering touches of emerald, olive and lime. On the right, a group of whitewashed cottages crowd together beneath steep roofs. One stands half-roofless, its bare timber rafters glowing red and gold against the sky, while a tree in autumnal russet leaf blends into the warm tones of the old tiles. A low wall capped with terracotta runs across the foreground, softened by roses and flowering shrubs.

Delestre's handling is vigorous and tactile, the paint laid on in thick, broken strokes that catch the light across the whole surface. His debt to Pissarro and the Neo-Impressionists is clear, but the heavy impasto and lively rhythm are distinctly his own. He exhibited at the major Paris Salons and his work is conserved in the museums at Clamecy, Morlaix and St. Germain en Laye. A stunning painting and very striking.
