LightZone is a professional-level digital darkroom and photo editor. It reads camera RAW files and edits a photo as a stack of tools, where every tool can be switched off, reordered, readjusted or removed at any point, in the current session or in a later one, and the original file is left exactly as it was. It works in a 16-bit linear color space with the ProPhoto RGB gamut. This disc carries the releases the project publishes for Windows, for both kinds of Mac and for Linux, together with the complete source code and the application's own Help book.
The idea the program is built around is the one a darkroom printer worked with. A printer chose how much of an adjustment to apply and in what order, and could change their mind at any stage, because the negative itself was never altered. LightZone applies that same approach to a digital photograph. Tools are added to a stack down the side of the window, and the stack can be rebuilt as many times as you like without touching the file you imported.
Nothing here needs special knowledge. Open the browser window to find your folders, then the editor window to work on one photo. The Help book on the disc walks through every panel and every tool, and the Read Me names the exact file to use on each machine.
The application's documentation is a built-in Help book, and that book travels on this disc as 144 readable HTML pages with their illustrations.

Is this really an alternative to the subscription photo editors?
It is a full non-destructive RAW photo editor rather than a subscription. It reads the RAW files from a wide range of cameras, it edits in a 16-bit wide-gamut color space, and it applies a style to a whole batch at once. It does not have a catalog or a cloud library, and it does not sync between machines. What it does, it does without an account and without a monthly payment.
Does this work on a Mac?
Yes, and both kinds of Mac are covered. The current release is a native build for Apple Silicon that asks for macOS 14 Sonoma or newer, and it is the one to use on an M1 or later. On an Intel Mac, the 4.2.5 disk image asks for macOS 12 Monterey or newer, and the 4.1.7 disk image is the build the project kept for older Intel Macs. To see which Mac you have, open the Apple menu and choose About This Mac: a Chip line means Apple Silicon and a Processor line means Intel. The same window shows the macOS version.
Why are there so many versions of the same program on the disc?
Because the project's own requirements changed between series. The current release needs Windows 11 and a current Mac, while the 4.2.x series still serves Windows 7, 8 and 10 and Intel Macs, and the 4.1.x series adds 32-bit Windows and older Intel Macs. Each release is here because it opens a door the current one closes, and the Read Me says which one to use. Installing one has no effect on the others.
Is the manual included?
Yes. The application's own Help book travels on the media, in the folder Documentation\LightZone Help (English). Open TOC.html in any browser to start reading it, with nothing installed. The release notes, the developer's changelog, its README and the license text are beside it.
Does it need a product key or activation?
No. LightZone is released under the BSD 3-Clause license, so there is no product key, no activation step, no registration and no account. The developer places no limit on the number of computers it is used on.
Can I install it on more than one computer?
Yes. The BSD 3-Clause license permits redistribution in source or binary form, and it places no limit on the number of machines. Install it on as many of your own computers as you like.
Do I need to copy the pack to my computer first?
For DVD orders, copy the pack folder to your computer (for example, your Desktop) first, then run the installer from there. DVDs have much slower read speeds than USB drives, and a DVD install run directly from the disc will be slow. The Help book can be read straight from the media if you would rather not copy anything yet.
