Cube 2: Sauerbraten, the arena first person shooter with a map editor built into the engine, for Windows, macOS and Linux, with the engine source code and the project's own documentation on one disc or drive.
This pack carries the complete current release of Cube 2: Sauerbraten: the Windows installer, the macOS disk image and the Linux package, which are the three files the project itself offers, together with the engine source code and the project's own documentation set.
The map editor is the reason this game still has a following. It is part of the engine rather than a separate program, so geometry can be reshaped while the game is running, including while other people are on the same map. The engine underneath it is a compact piece of work: a six directional heightfield world held in an octree, lightmaps with shadows cast by the map models themselves, and a rendering path built to keep frame rates high on older hardware.
Nothing here needs special knowledge to start. Install it, open the game, and the single player modes, the bots and the server browser are on the menus. The editor is reached with one key, and the project's own tutorial walks through building a map.

src/readme_source.txt carries the terms inside every release. The Cube 2: Sauerbraten name is used here to refer to that game. This pack is an independent compilation and is not endorsed by or affiliated with the Cube 2 project. The software box shown in any product images is a display image only and is not included. You receive the media only.

How is this item delivered?
This is a physical item (USB drive or DVD) that will be shipped to you. Choose your format when you order.
Which file should I install?
Windows: run sauerbraten_2020_12_21_windows.exe. Intel Mac: open sauerbraten_2020_12_21_macos.dmg. Apple Silicon Mac: the same disk image, which runs under Rosetta 2. Linux: unpack sauerbraten_2020_12_29_linux.tar.bz2 and start it with the launcher script inside. The Read Me on the media repeats the list in a table.
Does this work on a Mac?
Yes, through the project's own Mac disk image. It is an Intel build and its own load commands declare macOS 10.14 Mojave as its minimum. On an Apple Silicon Mac it runs through Rosetta 2, which macOS offers to install the first time it is needed. To check which Mac you have, open the Apple menu, then About This Mac: a Chip line means Apple Silicon and a Processor line means Intel.
Is the manual included?
Yes, as the project publishes it. Its documentation is a set of web pages rather than a printed book: the reference README, the game guide, the configuration guide, the editing tutorial, the editing reference, the models guide, the change history and the example RPG guide, with the tutorial screenshots. That is sixteen files, and they open offline in any browser from the Documentation folder.
Is the source code included?
Yes. The complete engine source tree is inside the Windows installer and inside the Linux package, with the project's Visual Studio project files and its Makefile. The engine is under the zlib license.
Which version is this?
The current release the project publishes: the files the project's own download page offers today, for Windows, macOS and Linux. It is the newest version the developer has published.
Can I play against bots with no internet connection?
Yes. The game has two single player modes plus bots in multiplayer maps, and none of that needs the internet. The documentation is on the media as well, so nothing has to be fetched to read it.
Does the online server browser work?
The game lists public servers through the project's master server, which is at master.sauerbraten.org, and it has done so since this build was published. A local network game and a game against bots do not use the master server at all. If you plan to play online, that is the one part of the game which depends on a service run by the project rather than on the files in this pack.
Does this software need a product key or activation?
No. The engine is under the zlib license, so there is no product key, no activation step, no registration, and no account. It can be installed on as many computers as you like.
Is this a portable program?
On Windows it installs, and the installer creates a Start menu entry. The Linux package runs from a folder without installing anything into the system, and the Mac build runs from your Applications folder. Start the Windows game from its shortcut rather than from the file inside the bin64 folder, because the engine loads its data from the folder it is started in.
Do I need to copy the pack to my computer first?
For DVD orders, copy the pack folder to your computer (for example, your Desktop) first, then run the installer from there. DVDs have much slower read speeds than USB drives, and an install run directly from the disc will be slow.
