Offered here is a 33 1/3 rpm LP Recording of American Songs in German for the OSS Office of Strategic Services featuring Marlene Dietrich issued in the 1940s by Columbia Records.  The bottom of the LP shows wear.

Marlene Dietrich recorded American pop songs translated into German for the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) as part of a 1944 psychological warfare initiative called the Muzak Project.

The Mission: Run by the Morale Operations Branch of the OSS (the precursor to the CIA), the project used popular music to weaken the resolve of Axis troops.

The Execution: Standard, upbeat American tunes were re-recorded with bittersweet or melancholic German lyrics to induce homesickness and despair (Weltschmerz) among German soldiers.

Dietrich's Involvement: Having renounced her German citizenship and become a U.S. citizen in 1939, Dietrich was the only performer explicitly told her recordings were for secret OSS broadcasts. OSS head Major General William J. Donovan later personally thanked her, and she was awarded the Medal of Freedom in 1947.
