Our Queen: The Life and Times of Victoria, Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, Empress of India, etc.

A particularly attractive 1897 Diamond Jubilee edition, published by Walter Scott Ltd. to commemorate the sixtieth year of Queen Victoria's reign.

The publisher's contemporary catalogue specifically advertised this as its “Diamond Jubilee Edition”, complete with 35 full-page illustrations and an elegantly decorated specially designed cover.

This example retains that striking original green pictorial cloth binding, elaborately blocked in gilt, red and black with royal and imperial motifs including a crown, sailing and steam vessels, roses, thistles and shamrocks, crossed swords and the Royal Arms to the spine.

The volume has gilt page edges and bevelled boards, and opens with a photographic portrait frontispiece of Queen Victoria by Russell & Sons.

The extensively illustrated biography covers Victoria's life and reign together with the major political, social, industrial and cultural events of the Victorian era.

Condition

Good decorative antique appearance with age-related wear and an important binding fault.

The original green cloth remains very attractive, with strong gilt, red and black decoration. There is rubbing and wear to the extremities, including bumped and worn corners and wear around the spine ends and board edges.

The front internal hinge is significantly cracked/open, exposing part of the binding structure. The front board nevertheless remains attached. This has been photographed clearly and should be taken into account when purchasing.

There is scattered foxing and age spotting, particularly to the endpapers and around some preliminary pages. The main text is generally clean and readable.

The gilt page edges retain a good degree of colour with age-related marking and wear.

No dust jacket, as issued.

Please study all photographs carefully as they form an important part of the condition description.
