Signed stoneware vessel by ceramic artist Kazuko Kayasuga Matthews, featuring a bold checkerboard pattern on one side and horizontal stripes on the reverse.
The flattened oval body, thick rounded rim and curved handle give this piece a playful sculptural presence. Black and off-white/gray decoration contrasts with the glossy dark brown-black rim and handle, while a reddish-brown glaze adds warmth to the interior.
Matthews’ work is represented in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian’s Renwick Gallery.
