Released via Newark’s independent Regent Records subsidiary in 1952, this 10-inch shellac single features the raw talent of Mary DeLoatch (often spelled Mary DeLoach). Delivering a towering vocal display, DeLoatch provides a masterclass in post-war sacred blues. Revealingly, DeLoatch leveraged this exact vocal grit to cut secular R&B records under the moniker Marilyn Scott.
Recorded: 1952.
The Tracks: The A-side, "The New Gospel Street," bursts with acoustic fervor.
The B-side, "The Lord's Gospel Train," stands as a historic landmark. Driven by a dark, moody guitar riff over a hypnotic, chugging locomotive beat, DeLoatch commands the track with tremendous depth and physical power. This record captures the exact moment where sanctified gospel elements fused with secular rhythm to birth early Rock & Roll.

The early 1950s marked a profound demographic shift across the United States. The Second Great Migration brought millions of African Americans into Northern industrial hubs like Newark, New York, and Chicago. In these dense urban centers, storefront churches and traveling gospel revivals became emotional anchors.Music like "The Lord's Gospel Train" reinterpreted traditional, Southern spiritual themes through an urgent, amplified, urban lens. The metaphor of the gospel locomotive resonated deeply with a displaced working-class population—offering a rhythmic message of salvation, movement, and eventual socio-economic deliverance that spoke directly to Black audiences navigating the realities of a segregated post-war America.

The Savoy Connection: Regent Records operated as a vital subsidiary of Savoy Records, the heavyweight independent label founded by Herman Lubinsky in Newark, New Jersey
.Distribution Loops: Independent operations like Savoy and Regent bypassed conservative national networks to record raw regional music. They distributed these specialized 1000-series gospel releases directly to independent record stores, church congregations, and Southern distributors.
Scarcity: Because these independent regional runs were highly restricted and heavily played on budget home phonographs, finding a pristine survivor from Regent’s 1950–1952 era is rare

Condition Report
Visual Grade: Excellent Plus (E++) VJM System.
Play Surface: Outstanding archive quality. The early 1950s shellac compound retains its spectacular, deep-black factory mirror shine. Under intense inspection lighting, the play surfaces present as remarkably immaculate, completely free from the gray acoustic groove-wear, deep scuffs, needle drops, pit marks, or edge chips that plague independent pressings from this era.
Audio Performance: Both sides play with thunderous acoustic presence, absolute clarity, and zero tracking distortion. DeLoatch’s booming vocals and the stinging guitar vamps register with superb definition. The background noise floor is extraordinarily quiet, completely lacking the heavy underlying hiss or structural surface crackle typical of early 1950s independent budget shellac.
Center Labels: Beautiful burgundy and silver Regent typography featuring the classic corporate layout. Both labels are beautifully bright, clean, and crisp with highly reflective silver print. The center spindle hole remains perfectly tight with zero trailing wear, and the surfaces are completely free of vintage dealer stickers, layout tearing, or ink writing.
