Antique Victorian Cast Iron Box Slug Flat Iron Wooden Handle Original Insert
Good overall antique condition. Considerable age-related surface wear, oxidation, marks and patina. The wooden handle has extensive cracking and a substantial area of historic damage/loss, as photographed. There is also historic damage/wear around the rear slot where the plate lifts to insert slug. Original slug is present.
Antique cast iron box or slug iron, believed to date from the Victorian period. This type of smoothing iron was heated using the removable solid iron slug, which was heated separately before being inserted into the hollow body.
Heavy cast iron construction with turned wooden handle, iron supports and brass-coloured handle release fitting. Includes the removable triangular heating slug. An interesting piece of domestic and laundry history with strong decorative appeal.
Unbranded with no maker's marks found.
