Here we have an unusual and handsome Set of Six Victorian Sterling Silver Teaspoons plus matching Sugar Tongs. The set has a pierced scrolling design at the tops of the stems which are matched on the arms of the sugar tongs. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The set was made in London by renowned silversmiths Sibray, Hall & Co and date to 1898. The firm was founded in Sheffield in 1878 by Frederick Sibray and Job Frank Hall and registered marks in Sheffield and London, where they opened a showroom in 1890. After Sibray’s death in 1891, Hall continued alone before taking Charles Clement Pilling as partner in 1898, who took sole control of the firm in 1900. The company remained in business into the mid-1920s.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 125 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

Each spoon is 11.2cm / 4.4ins long and the sugar tongs are 10.5cm / 4.1ins long. All together the set weighs in at a very respectable 85.2g / 3oz / 2.7toz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the backs of the stems and the inside curve of the sugar tongs, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter c for 1898 (apart from one spoon which has d for 1899) and the J.H makers' mark for Job Hall of Sibray, Hall & Co.
