Portrait Miniature of a Young Lady, Restauration Period, c. 1820–1825

French portrait miniature depicting an elegant young lady, dating from circa 1820–1825, during the
French Restoration period.
The sitter is portrayed bust-length before a softly painted landscape and blue sky. She wears a pale
grey dress with a low square neckline and a particularly attractive green shawl decorated with small
red and dark motifs.
Her dark hair is arranged in a fashionable high coiffure, with carefully formed curls falling across the
forehead and temples. The hairstyle is ornamented with a red comb or diadem, beautifully
complemented by a delicate red coral bead necklace and matching drop earrings.
The combination of the elaborate coiffure, coral jewellery, high-waisted dress and softly modelled
landscape background is characteristic of fashionable female portraiture during the early years of
the French Restoration.
The use of coral jewellery is particularly attractive. Coral necklaces, earrings and hair ornaments
were fashionable accessories during this period and appear in documented French portrait
miniatures of the 1810s and 1820s.
The portrait is delicately painted, with particular attention given to the sitter's expressive dark eyes,
carefully arranged curls and colourful jewellery. The green patterned shawl provides a particularly
decorative contrast with the restrained tones of the dress and the blue-grey landscape background.

Frame: Preserved in a very attractive circular gilt-metal frame, most probably original to the miniature,
with finely decorated borders, its original convex glass and pale pink silk mount. Two suspension rings
with an old silk ribbon are fitted to the upper part of the frame.

Overall including frame: 11 cm diameter / 4.33 inches diameter
Condition: Very good antique condition overall. The portrait remains well preserved, with only minor
age-related wear and slight rubbing around the extreme outer edge. The colours remain attractive
and the principal painted areas, including the sitter's face, costume, jewellery and landscape
background, present very well. Please examine the photographs carefully as they form an integral
part of the condition description.
