Antique French Miniature Portrait oil on copper circa 1710-1720

18th-century French portrait miniature, painted in oil on copper, depicting an elegant

gentleman and dating from circa 1710–1720, at the transition between the end of the

reign of Louis XIV and the beginning of the Régence.

The sitter is portrayed bust-length against a very dark background, wearing an imposing

dark full-bottomed wig falling around his shoulders, a white neckcloth and a magnificent

deep red drapery wrapped around his upper body.

His appearance is characteristic of aristocratic male portraiture during the closing years

of the reign of Louis XIV and the beginning of the Régence of Philippe d'Orléans.

The voluminous wig and formal draped presentation still belong strongly to the courtly

portrait tradition established under Louis XIV, while the probable dating around 1715

places the work precisely at the transition into the Régence.

Following the death of Louis XIV in 1715, Philippe d'Orléans became Regent of France

during the minority of the young Louis XV. The period therefore represents a particularly

interesting transition between the late Louis XIV aesthetic and the developing artistic taste

of the Régence.

The portrait is painted in oil on an oval copper support. The dark background concentrates

attention upon the sitter's face, while the rich red drapery provides a strong and particularly

decorative contrast.

The miniature is presented in an antique rectangular dark wooden frame with a large oval black

inner surround and an attractive gilt-metal bezel decorated with a continuous engraved foliate motif.

Frame: Presented in an antique rectangular dark wooden frame with a large oval black inner surround

and finely decorated gilt-metal bezel. The frame is later than the portrait and therefore not original to

the painting, although it is itself antique.

Overall including frame: 14.1 × 12.5 cm / 5.55 × 4.92 inches

Condition: Antique condition with age-related wear and surface irregularities consistent with the

considerable age of the painting. There is a relatively significant area of paint loss in the dark

background at the upper left edge, together with a smaller area of paint loss at the upper

right edge. Minor scattered surface wear and marks are also visible. The principal painted areas

of the sitter remain clearly legible. Please examine the photographs carefully as they form an

integral part of the condition description.
