Notable as a debut for introducing the blistering pace of the diminutive leader. A very fine album, with the enthusiasm of the 18 boppers ratings before my review keeping it at 4.5 stars, but if you wanted to be critical you might note a long term tendency to run out of melodic ideas before the end of many solo's, a case of his fingers being quicker than his improv brain - a criticism levelled by some at his spiritual British equivalent Tubby Hayes. I get this though, as it means a soloist is being ambitious, and taking risks results in occasional failure (and before you shoot me down in flames, I am aware they are building the 'plane as well as flying it at the same time!). Superb as Wynton Kelly can be, this is not his finest hour, with the other late 50s albums pianists he performs with being stronger and bringing more to the table (e.g. Monk, Mance and Clark). He continues to improve through the fifties at Blue note, and I for one think his first decade as a leader is at its optimum on 1962's Kerry Dancers, with the strongest of the Blue Notes being Congregation.
