This historic souvenir booklet was published to commemorate the grand June 11, 1929 launch of Great Northern's brand-new premier transcontinental train, the Empire Builder. Named in honor of the railroad's iconic founder, James J. Hill, the train was introduced alongside the opening of the record-breaking Cascade Tunnel. The booklet's introductory pages explicitly spotlight this "longest railway tunnel in the Western World... successfully opened in January, 1929."
