A highly unusual and decorative 1950s Italian maiolica vase by Egisto Fantechi of Sesto Fiorentino, Italy.

The vase has a wonderful sculptural ring/pierced form with an integrated open handle construction and beautifully hand-painted floral decoration. The main motif is a large stylised orchid in pink, yellow, turquoise and green, set against dramatic black, ivory and blue-grey areas with gilt detailing.

The underside carries the distinctive Fantechi Sesto Fiorentino factory mark, including the characteristic shield and dividers device and maioliche wording.

This is a particularly eye-catching example of Fantechi's post-war decorative production, combining strong mid-century form with earlier Art Deco/Liberty influences.
