A full-length real photo postcard studio portrait of a young African American man, circa 1910–1918, posed standing beside a bentwood café chair in front of a painted studio backdrop. He wears a light-colored three-button summer suit with flap pockets, a white shirt with high collar and knotted tie, cuffed trousers, dark lace-up shoes, and a light wide-brimmed hat pushed back on his head. He rests one hand on the chair back and looks directly into the camera with an even, self-possessed expression — a young man dressed in his best for a portrait he clearly intended to keep or send.
The card is unposted and unidentified — no name, studio, or location appears anywhere. The back carries the AZO stamp box with four upward-pointing triangles, the Kodak paper stock used from 1904 to 1918, and the divided "Correspondence Here / Name and Address Here" layout of the post-1907 era. The clothing places it in the 1910s.
Studio portraits of African American sitters from the first decades of the twentieth century are collected as social history — images made at a time when Black Americans commissioned their own photographs as a statement of dignity and standing, in the decades between Reconstruction and the Great Migration — and this one has the direct gaze and careful dress that make such portraits compelling.
Condition is fair and should be judged from the photos. The card has significant age toning and foxing across the front, heaviest in the upper right and along the left side, with scattered dark spots on the image; the image itself remains clear and legible with good detail in the face, suit, and chair. The upper right corner has a diagonal crease, and there is light edge wear with a small bump at the lower left. The back is uniformly toned with stains and a large tide mark at lower left. No tears, tape, or writing. Standard size, approximately 3½ x 5½ inches. Ships in a rigid mailer within 3 business days.
