Gazette de France – No. 96 – 2 December 1785 – Original-Period French Newspaper – Imprimerie Royale, Paris
For sale is a decorative framed historical newspaper sheet from the Gazette de France, dated Friday, 2 December 1785.
The printed heading reads:
“GAZETTE DE FRANCE”
“N°. 96.”
“Du Vendredi 2 Décembre 1785.”
At the bottom of the visible left-hand page, the imprint reads:
“A PARIS, DE L’IMPRIMERIE ROYALE. 1785.”
The newspaper was published during the reign of King Louis XVI, only a few years before the French Revolution.
The framed sheet shows two newspaper pages side by side. The left-hand page is numbered 402, while the right-hand page contains the title and date of issue.
The visible contents include contemporary political, diplomatic, economic and commercial news from several European cities and regions, including reports from Copenhagen, Stockholm, Madrid and Prague.
The newspaper also contains a section headed:
“COURS DES EFFETS PUBLICS, 1785”
with historical prices of public securities, as well as:
“CHANGES du 30”
showing contemporary exchange rates for cities including Amsterdam, London, Hamburg, Madrid, Cádiz, Livorno, Genoa and Lyon.
The lower section also contains period advertisements and notices relating to books, medicine and music.
The newspaper is displayed behind glass with a turquoise/blue-green backing in an older decorative gold/brass-coloured frame.
The newspaper shows clear age-related wear consistent with an old paper document.
There are visible fold lines, age-related discoloration, stains, marks, small irregularities and minor losses/wear along the edges of the paper. The sheet nevertheless appears generally well preserved considering its age, and the printed text remains largely clear and legible.
The frame and mounting are considerably newer than the newspaper itself and show normal signs of age and use.
The newspaper has not been removed from the frame for inspection, therefore the reverse side, exact mounting method and full condition of the paper cannot be confirmed.
