Date & Location Identification

  • Date: July 8, 1928

  • Location: Luftschiffbau Zeppelin Hangar, Friedrichshafen, Lake Constance, Germany

  • Historical Context: This photograph documents the official christening ceremony of the world's most famous rigid airship, the LZ 127 Graf Zeppelin. The event occurred inside the primary assembly shed at Friedrichshafen on what would have been Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin's 90th birthday.

Detailed Visual Analysis & What the Photo Shows

This original panoramic photograph captures a crucial moment in aviation history from inside the massive Zeppelin construction hall.

  • The Airship Hull & Lettering (Far Left): The bold, crisp block lettering reading "GRAF ZEPPELIN" is clearly visible painted along the forward hull above the control gondola.

  • Control Gondola & Imperial German Ensign: Below the hull, the forward control car (gondola) is fitted with large panoramic observation windows. Hanging directly below the windows is the black, white, and red flag of Germany (Weimar/Imperial civil ensign) draped during the ceremony.

  • Christening Bunting & Sandbags: A long series of teardrop-shaped ballast sandbags hang suspended in a uniform row beneath the lower keel structure on wooden trestles.

  • The Crowd: Hundreds of onlookers, dignitaries, press members, and factory workers gather inside the hall along the floor, gazing up at the mammoth airship.

  • Engine Gondola & Secondary Airship Structure (Right): Moving along the panorama to the right, one of the side-mounted Maybach engine power cars is suspended from the hull with its wooden access ladder intact. To the far right, part of another massive airship hull/hangar structure frame is visible inside the shed.

Detailed Item Description

Up for sale is a rare, original 1928 silver gelatin panoramic photograph measuring 19 inches long by 7-1/4 inches high, capturing the iconic LZ 127 Graf Zeppelin inside the Friedrichshafen hangar during its historic christening on July 8, 1928.

This is an original period print—not a modern reprint or digital scan. Panoramic images from inside the Zeppelin assembly sheds during christening ceremonies are scarce, as most press photographs of the era were taken from exterior vantage points after the airship rolled out onto the airfield.

Condition Details:

  • Print is stored rolled, resulting in expected characteristic curling.

  • Tonal quality remains excellent with rich blacks and clear highlights.

  • Minor age-related handling wear, including light edge rippling and faint surface creasing consistent with unmounted rolled paper prints of this vintage.
