A Gigantic oil mon canvas by Walter Sturat Lloyd - A sandy track winds down between Scots pines and slender birches towards open water, the sea showing as a band of cool green-blue beyond the last of the trees with a distant sail on the horizon. A countrywoman in a white cap climbs the bank at the right with a bundle of faggots on her back, and further off two small figures move along the lane beside a broken rail fence.
Lloyd has painted the whole in the low, warm key of a late autumn afternoon — russet bracken, dark pine, birches turning gold — with a high, luminous sky of cream and pearl doing the work, and the wet ruts of the track catching the last of the light.
Lloyd was based at Brighton and Hove and took most of his subjects from the south coast, though he travelled widely in England, Wales and Scotland. He was elected to the Royal Society of British Artists in 1879 and exhibited some forty works at the Royal Academy and over a hundred and sixty at Suffolk Street, winning a gold medal at the Crystal Palace exhibition of 1891. He is best known today for his panoramic watercolours; oils of this size are comparatively scarce, and this is an ambitious early example, painted when he was newly a member of the RBA.

Walter Stuart Lloyd lived and worked in Brighton. He was a member of the Royal Society of British Artists. His work featured in a number of the British exhibitions from 1875 to 1913.
