Nymphs Surprised at the Bath "

A group of nymphs gathered at the edge of a woodland pool in the full Rococo taste. One stands wrapped in gold drapery, her companion reclining before her against a fall of rose-red silk, while at the left two further heads press forward through the reeds, half-hidden, watching. A basket of roses sits on the bank at their feet, and one bare foot dips into the clear water below. Beyond, a fragment of antique masonry rises among flowering trees, and the whole is painted in a cool, silvery register of grey-green, dove and rose that gives the picture its particular decorative charm.

The subject and its arrangement derive from the world of François Boucher, whose bathers and nymphs were diffused across Europe through the engravings of Demarteau and Daullé and endlessly adapted by decorative painters. The thin, flat handling and the tall format suggest that this canvas was conceived as part of a boiserie or as an overdoor, painted to be seen at height and at a distance within a decorative scheme. A handsome and atmospheric survival of the type, in a carved and gilded frame.
