A fine antique English sterling silver Belcher watch chain with an intricately engraved silver Vesta case.

This watch chain features a T-Bar toggle (typically used to secure pocket watches through a waistcoat or jacket buttonhole) and a traditional swivel dog-clip clasp at the opposite end (for latching a pocket watch or additional fob accessories). The beautiful Vesta is decorated on both sides with scrollwork and foliate engravings. It features a loop bail connecting it directly to the watch chain. Vesta cases traditionally served to carry matches safely.

This watch chain can be worn as originally intended, or could be repurposed and worn today as a short choker necklace as shown in photos.

The watch chain measures approximately 17 inches long (between dog clip and loop connecting the T-Bar), has a 1 inch drop between watch chain and both Vesta and T-Bar, with the Vesta measuring approximately 1 5/8 inches tall by 1 inch wide and 3/8 inches thick and collectively all components weigh approximately 42.5 grams.

Various components have English hallmarks:

• most of the links on the chain are marked with a Lion passant, the British mark for Sterling Silver;

• the T-Bar is marked with the Lion passant, date mark for 1882 and a makers mark (EP) probably for Edwin Page who was registered in Birmingham in 1882;

• the dog clip is marked with a Lion passant, a date letter for 1882 and a makers mark (E.P.) likely for Edwin Page; and

• the Vesta is marked on the inside with hallmarks showing it was made in 1904 in Birmingham, England, probably by a jeweler named Joseph Gloster (J.G).
