Description

An atmospheric original oil painting associated with George Sherwood Hunter (1846–1919), the Scottish-born British artist closely associated with the Newlyn School.

The work depicts a dark, highly atmospheric interior, painted in deep browns, blacks and muted earth tones, with small areas of light emerging from the shadowed architectural setting.

The reverse carries handwritten references to “George S Hunter” / “George Sherwood Hunter”, together with “Quimperlé” and the number 532.

Quimperlé is in Brittany, France, an area closely associated with Hunter’s Continental work and with the wider group of British artists who travelled and painted in Brittany during the late 19th century.

Presented in an attractive traditional gilt frame.
